Today we talked about MMR(Mixed Methods Research) and how to design and conduct a MMR study. We reviewed styles of MMR design: one after another; dominant design; side-by-side. We can read as wide as possible but when we start our research or thesis writing, we should be as focus as possible. We looked into Wesely’s passage (2015), which consists the introduction part, Theoretical Background and Contex(literature review), Study Purpose and Design(methodology), conclusion and son on. Wendy analysed the data in figure 1 and the use of tables and figures to generally show readers the main idea. We need to Connect our research result to others’ research findings.
Question: what are the important/basic factors we need to consider when we design a table to present the findings of the research analysis?

We learnt a lot about Mixed Methods Research (MMR) in today’s lecture. Besides, I got new ideas about thesis writing layouts. In the introduction part, the organization of the rest part of the thesis could be mentioned to let the readers have an overview about the thesis. Furthermore, we can give a summary of what has been stated by applying a table, which can make it easier for readers to understand the point and save words. In designing the questionnaire and the interview questions, we can borrow something from former researchers and make proper adjustments if necessary.

Question:
During data analysis, how can one be able to write a long and detailed analysis? Are there any possible facets that should be involved?

Today I have learnt the followings:
Sub-title is important in a paper to make it clear.
Use a table in the part of research design, which makes things clear.
Before doing a research, it would be better to conduct a pilot.
Use Likert-scale to deal with survey analysis.
You have to report the result of t-test of ANOVA.
Quantitative analysis: SPSS
Basis procedures to find abnormal statistics.
1. Histogram: normally distribute or not
2. Normality assumption: accurate
Effect size
Question: How to make participants be willing to join in your research?

Reflections:
In today’s lecture, we were introduced a new research method-mixed methods research. After reading the article written by Ivankova and Greer (2015), we can get a basic understanding of this kind of research. Then Peter explained it from the aspect or reasons that involved triangulation, complementarity, development, initiation and expansion. Also the philosophical assumptions associated with MMR and its methodological characteristics were illustrated by Peter. Then we read an article about using MMR to explore construction written by Wesley. We focused on the overall framework at first, from which we learned how to better arrange the proportion of a thesis. Then under each subheading, Peter and Wendy helped us to analyze it. Again from Wendy’s presentation, I knew a little more about t-test and ANOVA.

Question:
Can you give us some examples of concurrent Quan+Quar MMR design and sequential Quan→Qual MMR design according to your own research experiences? Which one is more preferred by researchers? Thank you very much!

Today’s class mainly dealt with how to study multi-layered problems by applying Mixed Methods Research( a combination of qualitative and quantitative research). We came to know what is Mixed methods Research, why do we use MMR, and how to design and conduct a MMR study. Then Peter presented a new article authored by Wesely in detail, which used mixed method research to explore language learning motivation in early adolescents. Through the article reading,we’ve learned that proper organization of a a research article and the use of tables to help analyze the data,etc. And some practical questions were addressed about conversation analysis left in last class., and we benefited a lot from this lacture.

Reflection on Teaching Method
Today, we concentrated on the Mixed Research, which included the introduction of technical terms used in Mixed Research, characteristics of Mixed Research and then the design of a Mixed Research study. We spent a relatively long time analyzing the article concerning how to conduct an experiment by a mixed method. We picked the important part of the article to focus on that in detail. And during this process, I have already known the difference between qualitative research and quantitative research and their own features. Through a through explanation by Professor, I was clearly aware of the basic principle of conducting a mixed research and thanks to TA, I got to know more about the quantitative research. Finally, we turned our focus on solving the problems.
Question: When we conduct a research, how can we guarantee the reliability and validity of the instruments such as questionnaire, interview. And how can we modify our instruments after the pilot test?

Reflection
Based on what I had learnt these days, the lecture of today showed a clearer method and clue of data analyze. And thanks to the detailed analysis of the thesis of Wesely, I had a concrete concept of MMR and its application. Due every table we discussed in class, I know the specific step to read those data rather than just skip them, so all the data a researcher collected have their worth, which might affect the research result.

Question:
Now that we know the step and basic methods to analyze data, how to give a conclusive description of them in our thesis? What are the specific steps?

Reflection:
1、Toady we learned something about MMR. We know what is MMR and why do we use MMR. By using MMR, we can enrich our reaesrch data and make our research more valid and reliable.
2、During the process of liretature review, we can write down any ideas based on previous studies and research gap.
3、It's good to give subtitles in an article so that it can move clearly. And we need to provide each part (introduction, theretical background, study purpose and design, findings and discussion, conclusion)with appropriate proportion.
4、Using tables or figures in our article is an effetive way to present information and also to control the number of words.

In today’s lecture, we learned the Mixed Methods Research and Analysis.
Firstly, we got the six reasons why we use MMR.
Secondly, we learned the characteristics of MMR.
And Peter suggested us using tables to show our design of the research.
For the interview part, we can control it within 15-35 minutes.
Thirdly, I got some new terms, such as theme analysis, inductive and deductive codes, interpretive codes, which I also met several times in other articles.
Question:
Must we do the tests of homogeneity of variances and multiple comparisons in one-way ANOVA?

Hey, Peter!
Today, we mainly discussed about MMR (Mixed Methods Research), and how to adopt MMR in our research.
Before this class, I thought that the quantitative and qualitative research should be seperated clearly, because they are two types of research methods. But now, I learned a new method, that is, MMR.
So here's my question, I wonder that if MMR is suitable for any researches?

I am so sorry for missing today's lecture since i really feel not well in the morning. I hear from my classmates that today peter has introduced the Mixed Method Research, which is a combination of quantitative research and qualitative research. So i skim through the article named Mixed Methods Research and Analysis and learn something about its characteristics and how to design a Mixed Research study and why we should design such a sudy. It really provides a new thought for designing our future research. Thank you for offering so many benefical documents and sorry for today's absence again.

Reflection for the 4th day:
1.data should be verified through different methods.
2.When it comes to the problem of insider and outsider,we can say that no one can be a complete insider.however,though there are no clear cut between insider and outsider,we can still differentiate them through some certain aspects.
3.When choose the topic,three elements must be taken into consideration.they are authors’ interests,access to participants and authors’ ability as well as their knowledge of methodology.
4.Sometimes,contents for a article should be narrowed down due to some limitation.
5.When writing a literature review,one must give some personal comments.

Dear Peter,

Today I learned a lot about mixed methods research and analysis. Mixed methods research is not only a simple combination of both quantitative and qualitative studies. Instead, we need to think over the distribution ratio according to the topic and research questions. In addition, I knew more about how to narrow down a thesis topic to write. It is better to choose a topic which we have interest in, we are familiar with and is doable.

In the 4th class, I gained a better understanding about MMR(Mixed Methods Research), including what is MMR, the purpose of using MMR and the characteristics of MMR, besides, Peter offered us more details by elaborating the case study of using MMR, instrusting us about how to conduct a MMR step by step.
Question: in the second and third class, we discussed characteristics and data analysis of qualitative and quantitive research respectively, and the fourth class is more like a combination of these two research methods, so I want to know for a beginner researcher like us, which research method is more feasible?
